Spill Booms And Bunds
Simply put, a bund is a barrier surrounding an area where hazardous liquids are handled, processed, or stored. The most common type of bund has four walls and a base that surrounds a tank. If the tank leaks, the bund will contain the leak.
Because of their small size when packed, flexibility, and tool-free assembly, they are frequently used in situations where traditional rigid spill pallets are impractical, such as off-site.
Bund Applications
Outdoor applications include forestry, civil engineering, vehicle maintenance, machinery cleaning, and general spill risks. The bund can aid in the containment of liquid runoff and the prevention of environmental contamination.
What Are They Made of?
Bunds are made of welded PVC, which has high chemical resistance and is durable yet lightweight, making it a highly effective mobile secondary spill containment option.
Metal support brackets are used on each bund to provide additional structural support. When finished, the material is simple to maintain and clean.
What Size Should They Be?
Bunds must be large enough to contain the volume of any likely leak and impervious to liquid for them to be effective. When there is only one tank in the bund, the general sizing rules require that it hold 110% of the tank volume. When two or more tanks are in a bund, the bund must be larger than 110% of the largest tank or 25% of the total tank volume, whichever is greater.
Standard sizes range from small containers and cans to large vehicles and machinery; however, if you contact our sales team with your product and requirements, we can find something to suit your specific dimensions.
Do I Need a Bund?
All hazardous liquid storage should have secondary containment because uncontrolled release can cause environmental damage and create a hazardous working environment. If you cause pollution, you can be prosecuted, fined indefinitely, and held liable for all clean-up costs under the polluter pays principle.
However, as with many environmental issues, there are few legal requirements for bunding. However, the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) Regulations make adequate secondary containment on any external oil storage over 200 litres a legal requirement in the UK. Other sites, such as COMAH sites, may also be required by law to provide secondary containment on hazardous liquid storage, such as chemical tanks.
